How to rent a car in the Netherlands

In order to rent a car in the Netherlands, all drivers (including additional drivers) must hold and produce the following: 

- A driver's license valid in the country where the rental takes place that has been held for at least one year

- Valid identity card or passport

- Valid credit card in the renter's name  

Do you need an international driver's license to drive in the Netherlands?

You will need an international driver's license (IDL) if the following apply:

- Your license is written in a language different that that of the country you're renting from

- Your license is written in characters than cannot be read in the renting country

- Your license is not valid in the European Union

An international driver's license is valid only if accompanied by the normal driver's license. A valid identity card or passport must also be presented at the time of rental as well.

Age requirements for renting a car in the Netherlands

The minimum age to rent a car in the Netherlands is 18. Full size, Premium, and Luxury vehicle classes are only available to renters 25 years and older. The maximum rental age is 80.

When you rent a car in the Netherlands, it is important to keep the following in mind:

- Many people ride bicycles in the Netherlands. They have their own lanes on the street and have the right of way, so it is important to be very aware of cyclists while driving. 

- In high traffic areas, it is recommended to flash your lights instead of using your horn. You should only use the horn in an emergency situation. 

- Driving speed and parking are strictly enforced by police. Make sure you are abiding the speed limit and be aware of no parking zones to avoid heavy fines.
