Situated on the east coast of Ireland, Wexford is the county town of County Wexford and lies at the mouth of the River Slaney. It has a population of around 20,000 inhabitants and is well-known all over the country as a center of culture. Indeed, the town has a fascinating history, having first been founded by Viking visitors who settled in the ninth century. Its quay used to be a major port in Ireland up until the 1960s before it fell into decline. However, the bustling atmosphere at the quayside has returned thanks to a substantial redevelopment program. The town is a center of sporting activities, particularly Gaelic games, but also football, rugby and golf.
